Theatr Weekly | Theater Camp: Sing, Dance, Laugh, and S'More
Including closing shows, snippets from Theatr Writers Circle, and Theatr product updates
Welcome to theatre camp: the place “where every kid picked last in gym finally makes the team.”
The new comedy, Theater Camp, starring Ben Platt and Molly Gordon (who, in fact, met at theatre camp), hit select movie theaters on Friday and brought to the screen the strange, cult-ish activities that every theatre kid remembers fondly.
The film takes place at a sleepaway camp in upstate New York and features some of Platt’s and Gordon’s own memories of advanced shows, inappropriate lyrics, and a wonderful sense of community.
Check out Theater Camp if you want to relive some of your memories from Stagedoor Manor or French Woods and experience a little amateur theatre on the big screen this summer!

Peter Pan Goes Wrong
Andrew Agress / @Andrew / Experiential Dramaturg chasing work that engages the audience in the theatrical event. If it’s immersive, absurdist, or just plain strange and wonderful, I’ll be there.
Like The Play That Goes Wrong, Pan is a Rube Goldberg machine of a comedy show. One “mistake” leads to another, building into a cavalcade of delightful disaster. Go early for the pre-show, check out the comedically in-universe program, and catch this show before it flies to LA. Read more
Good Night, Oscar
Maggie Creasman / @maggiecreasman / Lover of live performance in any form! Writer, Watcher, Strong Mover
Sean Hayes has some of the quickest wit I’ve ever had the pleasure of enjoying. You can see the other actors working to keep pace with his impeccable timing and neurotic choices. The character of Oscar is shaking from detox but his punchlines never falter. His compulsive tendencies are always evident with the repetitive explosions that come from a man on the brink. Read more
Orpheus Descending
Andrew Agress / @Andrew / Experiential Dramaturg chasing work that engages the audience in the theatrical event. If it’s immersive, absurdist, or just plain strange and wonderful, I’ll be there.
Though perhaps it’s unfair to compare the play to Streetcar, it did have me wishing I was watching the iconic play instead. Still, it has its moments, namely in scenes just between Val and Lady, when they share their notions of freedom. Pico Alexander and Maggie Siff certainly help with their emotional and engaging performances. Read more
Love + Science (closed)
Ian Kennedy / @ianrken / Theatre writer / Theatre worker / Theatre lover
Love + Science’ places its emphasis on the virology behind H.I.V. and the early data that foreshadowed an epidemic. Does all this science jargon come at the expense of nuanced, well-developed character relationships? A bit. David J. Glass’ dialogue keeps our characters on the surface. The play offers solid performances, especially from real-life scientist/actor hybrid Matt Walker (Matt). Read more
